The family of a Northern Ireland woman, who was stabbed to death in Sydney, Australia, have said they are devastated following her murder.

The body of mother-of-three Comrie Cullen, 39 and originally from Bangor, was found slumped over a car in a remote carpark at Taren Point on Wednesday afternoon (Australian time).

Her estranged husband Christopher was found wounded close to the scene. The 50-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the investigation and remains in hospital under police guard.

It is understood the couple's marriage had broken down a couple of months ago and Ms Cullen had moved out of the family home with their children, who are aged 5, 7 and 11.

"Our family is devastated by Comrie's tragic death and we would ask for no media intrusion at this time," Ms Cullen's family in Co Down said in a statement.

Officers from the PSNI are supporting the family and liaising with their counterparts in Australia in relation to the investigation into her death, and to have her body returned home.

Superintendent Gregory Antonjuk, from New South Wales police, said the suspect in the case was found leaving a swampy mangrove area nearby with significant injuries to his arms and upper torso.

"We have the understanding that they were married for a period of 15-16 years and, as of late last year - around October - the couple became estranged and there were some domestic incidents related to that reported to police," he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"As a consequence of those reports, an apprehended violence order was issued by the courts."

No further reports had been made to police since November.

Supt Antonjuk told local media that a crime scene was established following the discovery of the woman's body.
